The object the author had in view in writing this book was to furnish information to various classes of readers - including parents and guardians who may have soem idea of placing their sons in the way of becoming engineers; boys who aspire to become engineers; youths who are serving their apprenticeship either in land or marine engineering works, as well as those who are working as journeymen, but wish to go to sea; and young engineers who have made a start at sea.
