The ship was launched in 1908 for North German Lloyd as the 'Bremen'. In 1914 she was interned in New York and seized as a US Navy transport in 1917. In 1920 she was initially chartered and then sold to the US Mail Steamship Line and renamed 'George Washington'. She served on the Bremen to New York route until she was laid up in 1931. She was used as a US Navy transport vessel in 1940 and was briefly renamed 'Catlin'. After the war service she was destroyed by fire and was scrapped in 1951.
