ОписаниеPainting, oil on canvas, portrait of the SS Great Britain after being refitted for the Australia run in 1852. The artist appears to have copied his setting from another painting by Samuel Walters.
The painting shows a starboard view of the SS Great Britain in her 1852 configuration with four masts and two parallel funnels. Masts number one and four carry a fore-and-aft rig, masts number two and three are square-rigged. The ship had been converted to a steam-assisted sailing ship to carry passengers between the UK and Australia. In this configuration the ship only made two voyages, one to New York and one to Australia in 1852/53.
The ship can be seen under sail with all sails set, in a calm and slightly choppy sea, with the Gibbs. Bright & Co. flag flying on mast number 3. A distant coastline and another sailing vessel can be seen in the background.
