ОписаниеCutting from a diary page dated Saturday 25th, Sunday 26th, and Wednesday 29th, 1843, by Sir Marc Brunel.
On Saturday 25th March, Marc writes, 'The Opening to the public has been effected! Nothing could be more Brilliant and in better order!' The tunnel continued to be open on the Sunday.
On Wednesday 29th, he remarks on the continuing number of visitors ('quite satisfactory for very great toll'), and that the Rotherhithe stairs work well for the visitors despite the stairs' narrowness.
He anticipates the 'particulars' of the tunnel's opening being included in the press. It was opened at 6pm, at a cost of one penny per person.
