ОписаниеLetter by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel to his son-in-law Benjamin Hawes, postmarked 26 December 1837. Written at '4 in the morning' and refers to the construction of the Thames Tunnel.
He discusses brickwork, means of connecting the polings, designs/drawings that show 'the state of the faces' including the polings and 'the nature of the ground', the replacement of missing side staves, and the influx of water. He says he needs the paper he sent to Hawes, without which he 'cannot demonstrate the nature of the ground [ ? ]^nor that of the [ ? ] which we have had to go through without it.' However, he wants a better drawing of this anyway. Postscript that 'Sophia is going to write.'
Signed 'M.I. Brunel' One sheet of paper folded. Addressed to 'Bn Hawes Esq. M.P. Mortlake' on reverse, with remains of a black seal and postmarks.
