НазваниеPages from ss Great Britain Passenger Diary, 1874
ОписаниеOne sheet containing pages 15-16 of a diary believed to be from an unidentified passenger on the SS Great Britain. It is possible that this diary belonged to someone called George Prengt Hughes, who travelled with his younger brother Charles P Hughes on this voyage in 1874. This would have been the 42nd voyage the ship made- it was travelling from Liverpool to Melbourne on the 4th of June 1974, carrying 601 passengers and 141 crew. The voyage took 57 days, and in these pages, the writer describes how the passengers had seen little land during their voyage- the only land seen being Palma and Madeira, of the Canary Islands. The writer notes the notable change of temperature after passing South Africa, how the passengers felt the ‘frequent gales of wind’ from the Southern Ocean, and how they watched the ship ‘plunging through or over waves the size of an ordinary house’. The diary talks about the author’s concerns over icebergs- how he suggested to the Captain their ‘instant destruction’ in the event the ship came into contact with fragments of icebergs, but the Captain assured him ‘he was not apprehensive of such a catastrophe’, and had ‘a man at all times on the look out’. On page 16 of the diary, the writer describes the activities of passengers on the ship as ‘the ordinary routine of the unemployed… reading and games’. He writes that he has taken to sketching to pass his time on the ship, and how having two professional musicians on the ship means they are able to dance ‘with spirit’.
