A companion volume to Factory Life and Work by the same author, this book describes the life of sailors from the first voyages of discovery and adventure and the defeat of the Spanish Armada to modern times - often in the words of the men from the lower deck themselves. The book contains numerous extracts from contemporary documents, such as memoirs, accounts of explorations, and diaries. The book is divided into eight main parts: Adventurers and Discoverers; East Indiamen and Pirates; The Press Gang; Nelson's Navy; Britannia Rules the Waves - Trafalgar to 1914; The Merchant Service; Total War - the First and Second World Wars; and The Sailor Today and Tomorrow.
