Iron Masters of Penns : 1720 - 1970
-
The Websters of Penns began their enterprise in the time of Marlborough and the business has proved as durable as the steel for which they were famous. Set in the background of the national history the story accelerates down the years; threaded with family problems, humour and drama often lie together, and in later years suspense is rarely absent. The tale is a true one without the cheap device of omitting the unpalatable and it depicts most of the range of human performance from inspiration and genius to utter imbecility. At the end one is left amazed that the firm still stands, but Webster and Horsfall, as it is now known, still remains — battered perhaps, but still on solid rock after two and a half centuries.
Written for the layperson, the technical data is easily followed. But mainly this book is about people, about the men who owned this ancient business, and about those who worked with them.
