Southern Octopus : The Rise of a Shipping Empire

Its supporters called the Union Steam Ship Company the largest shipping company south of the line while its many enemies called it 'The Southern Octopus'. Formed at Dunedin in 1875 by James Mills, an ambitious young clerk with an eye for the main chance, the Union Company became New Zealand's first multi-national.
