William W. Davidson worked as cook, able seaman and then quartermaster on a range of vessels from 1895 to 1901, before settling at his home port of Avonmouth. During his life at sea he visited India, the Suez Canal, Marseilles, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Chile, and Jamaica.
