-
In this article, the author explores the employment of women on British passenger liners between 1860 and 1938. By the mid-19th century, women's formal employment was concentrated almost exclusively on passenger liners and therefore their paid work at sea was strongly related to the development of passenger shipping. The author focuses on women employed as part of the catering personnel.
