Title1852 Trotman anchor or the SS Great Britain
DescriptionIron Trotman anchor, 1852 pattern. This anchor was found inside the SS Great Britain after the ship was salvaged from the Falkland Islands in 1970. This anchor most likely stems from the time the ship carried passengers to Australia.
In 1843 the ship was launched with porter anchors. An illustration in the Illustrated London News in 1845 shows these with wooden stocks. This Trotman anchor most likely stems from the time the ship carried passengers to Australia (1852 - 1876).
The shaft of the anchor is bent, which would have required immense pressure to achieve. It is unclear what incident could have caused this.
