DescriptionCommemorative launch medallion, The Great Britain Steam Ship, Bristol 1843, with chain. Medal measures 27mm in diameter. Chain measures 640mm. Medal is complete and in good condition. Obverse bears a starboard view of the vessel. Obverse inscription reads: THE GREAT BRITAIN STEAM-SHIP/ LAUNCHED AT BRISTOL In exergue: LENGTH 322 FT/ BREADTH 50.6./ DEPTH 32.6/ J.GARDNER. Reverse inscription reads: THE IRON/ STEAM SHIP/ WAS LAUNCHED IN/ THE PRESENCE OF/ H.R.H. PRINCE ALBERT/ JULY 19.1843/ THE WEIGHT OF IRON/ USED IN THE SHIP/ AND ENGINES IS/ UPWARDS OF/ 1500 TONS/ CONSTRUCTED BY T. R. GUPPY Esc. C. E. Small hole in the top of the medal where chain loop is attached. C on the Scholten rarity scale (needs to be verified). Seaby's Coin and Medal Bulletin, 2119 (needs to be verified).
