TitleThe SS Great Britain in 1852 - 1857
DescriptionA painting showing the SS Great Britain in the period of 1852 - 1857 as she first looked when converted for the Australia trade. The image is reverse painted onto a pane of glass.
The port side of the ship is shown with sails set on her four masts and steam coming out of the two parallel funnels. A white pennant flag is flying at the top of the main mast, with an American flag on her third mast and a red ensign on the mizzen mast.
The ship is shown at sea with no land features in the background. A slightly naive execution of a blue sky with some white clouds and a moderately rippled sea can be seen in the foreground. Underneath the painting is the title 'The Iron Steam Ship Great Britain'.
