TitleGreat Britain Steam Ship on shore in Dundrum Bay
CreatorStandidge & Co (lithographer), Frances Charlotte FitzGerald-de Ros (artist)
DescriptionA monochrome print on card showing the SS Great Britain run aground in Dundrum Bay on the coast of Northern Ireland in 1846. The view is described as how the ship appeared from the Coastguard Station on 1 October 1846, a few days after she had run aground.
The ship is in the centre of the image and shown with a view of her bows. She is in very shallow water, sitting high on the sandy beach. Anchor cables can be seen securing the ship in place, and all sails are furled. Towards the left side of the image, two tug paddle steamers can be seen waiting for the tide to come in. In the foreground small boats can be seen taking cargo, luggage and other materials to shore where everything is loaded onto carts pulled by horses. The Mourne Mountains are visible in the background.
