DescriptionPossibly a section of the transatlantic cable from ss Great Eastern. Made from copper cord with natural fibre insulation.
A label was attached to this section of the cable giving the following information: This section of the cable was reputedly given to the late Admiral C. S. Wills RN of Clifton, Bristol when he was a young officer of the escort to the ship laying the replacement cable. His father was supposedly taken by I. K. Brunel over the Avon Gorge in a basket before the Clifton Suspension Bridge was built.
A label had been attached to this section of cable. Due to its fragility this has been removed and placed in the object history file. It is currently illegible.
