DescriptionMedal commemorating the launch of The Great Britain steam ship in 1843. WM medal, 41mm, manufactured by J.Davis, Birmingham. Poor condition. Medal is corroded around the edge and on the reverse. Medal is slightly bent and does not lay completely flat. Obverse bears the heads of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, facing left. Inscription on obverse reads: QUEEN VICTORIA AND PRINCE ALBERT. Reverse bears a starboard view of the vessel. Inscription on reverse reads: THE GREAT BRITAIN in exergue: LENGTH 322 FT. BREATH 50 FT. 6IN./DEPTH 32FT. 6IN. 26 STATE ROOMS/WITH 1 BED EH. 113 WITH 2 BED EH/TOTAL WHT OF IRON 1500 TNS./1000 HORSE POWER/LAUNCHED BY/H.R.H PRINCE ALBERT JULY 19 1843/BUILT BY THE GREAT WESTERN STEAM COMPY. The medal has a small hole in the top.
