Creator W. S. Rowland (artist)
DescriptionWatercolour painted on card, showing the SS Great Britain rounding Cape Horn and passing an iceberg in 1874. Annotated on reverse to state that the artist is W. S. Rowland. Arthur and Joseph Rowland were passengers on the SS Great Britain in 1874 returning to the UK after a brief visit to Australia. Both were known to draw and paint. Arthur also had a brother called William Samuel Rowland, but his name does not appear on the passenger list.
A calm, green sea is visible in the foreground with several sea birds swooping low over the waves. A ship with all sails set is in the centre of the painting heading towards the observer. A large iceberg is visible on the right side, with several smaller icebergs in the background. Signed by the artist in the bottom right corner.
