TitleFramed Watercolour depicting Prison Hulks at Plymouth
Creator Edward Tucker (painter)
DescriptionFramed watercolour by nineteenth century marine artist Edward Tucker (senior). The piece depicts prison Hulks at Plymouth Harbour with two rowboats filled with relief guards.
The brush strokes are subtle and delicate, making the scene appear calm and still.
The painting details one key timber prison hulk. The rowboats have men wearing blue coats at the oars. The soldiers wear redcoats with white braces and tall black hats with white plumes. One soldier trails something in the water behind the rowboat. It has two masts, an ornate bowsprit and stairs leading to the deck. An Australian flag flies from the stern. A further four hulks are visible in the background. Barrel floating in foreground carries artist's signature.
The watercolour is framed and mounted in a modern frame and a label on the reverse details the artist and subject matter.
