TitleWatercolour of stormy coastal scene with vessel and castle
Creator Edward Tucker (painter)
DescriptionWatercolour by nineteenth century marine painter Edward Tucker (senior) showing sailing ships in heavy seas next to a castle on the coast.
Brushstrokes are loose and in muted tones, depicting a stormy sky and choppy seas. The dark skies contrast with the bright white silhouettes of seabirds in flight. On the left side, sunlight is shining through the clouds onto the scene on land.
There is the outline of a sailing boat in the centre with another vessel behind. A note on the reverse suggests that the castle is 'probably Bamburgh castle', which is in Northumberland.
In the bottom lefthand corner is the painters signature, E. Tucker.
Mounted in a modern gold frame with some damage. Backboard secured with masking tape.
