TitleSS Great Britain at sea, 1846
DescriptionPainting of the SS Great Britain at sea in 1846, by an unknown artist. Port profile of the ship with all sails set, no smoke visible from the black funnel. The ship is shown after a first refit, reduced to five masts with two of them square-rigged whilst three masts retained the fore-and-aft rig. Although the sky appears calm, the big waves indicate quite a strong wind. Passengers and crew are visible on the deck of the ship.
In the background other large sailing vessels are visible. Without any further defining features such as a coastline, the dark sea in the foreground dominates the painting with the Great Britain in the centre.
The painting is framed in an elaborate gilt frame which appears to be contemporary.
