DescriptionPainting of the SS Great Britain as she moved down the river Avon on 12 December 1844 after over a year of fitting out in Bristol after her launch. A group of onlookers is visible in the foreground on the right side, with the Avon Gorge opening up in front of the viewer. The ship can be seen moving slowly down the river towards the Bristol Channel, with her stern clearly visible. There are several paddle tugs and small boats surrounding the ship.
