DescriptionPainting of the SS Great Britain arriving at South Street in New York on the 11th August 1845 after her maiden voyage across the Atlantic. The dockside is visible in the foreground with carts, barrels, small boats, and a few onlookers towards the left side of the painting. Larger vessels are visible in the background on the left, with the water of the Upper Bay extending towards the right side of the painting, with Brooklyn's waterfront visible in the far distance.
The SS Great Britain is visible from the port side with most sails furled but smoke still rising from the funnel. A paddle tug can be seen helping to manoeuvre the ship into position at the dock. Flags are flying at all mast tops and the red ensign at the stern.
