DescriptionThe carte de visite shows a group of 18 sailors and officers, posed in front of an unidentified building. The front row has six sailors sitting cross-legged on the ground, the second row has five sailors and two officers (wearing dark coats and seated in the centre) sitting on chairs, and the third row has five sailors standing. The printed caption is 'The only Survivors of H.M. late Ship "CAPTAIN," in the same / Clothing they wore on landing at Finisterre. / Liddiard, Photo, 182 Queen-St., Portsea.' HMS Captain sank off Cape Finisterre on 7 September 1870 with the loss of around 480 lives.
