DescriptionThe carte de visite shows a ship side view of the SS Egypt with a headsail, two square-rigged masts each with an additional fore-and-aft sail, then two funnels, and then two fore-and-aft rigged masts. There are passengers visible on the deck. On the horizon on the right is a ship side view of the SS Spain with the same mast and funnel configuration but no sails. In front of the SS Spain and approaching the SS Egypt is a small unidentified steam ship with a single mast and single funnel. The image is an engraving based on a painting by Samuel Walters (1811-1882).
On the front are printed: '(National Line) Steam Ships "Egypt" & "Spain".', 'S. Walters.', and 'Register'. On the reverse is a printed plan of the cabins of the SS Egypt and a handwritten note of: '£8.00'.
