TitlePage containing a drawings of a ship and church along with the hymn Almighty Father, hear our cry
Creator Edward West
DescriptionThis page contains two drawings and the text of a hymn
On the left of the page is an illustration of a steamship, which is likely the Gaika, a ship which the artist painted several times. The artist has used the same golden ink that they have used throughout the page on the windows and portholes of the ship.
On the right side of the page is an illustration of a stone church. As with the ship, the artist has used gold ink on the windows.
The author has written the hymn 'Almighty Father, hear our cry' on the page, decorating each stanza individually in a golden border. The hymn was written by Bishop Edward Henry Bickersteth, the bishop of Exeter between 1885 and 1900. The hymn was written by Bishop Bickersteth specifically to be sung at sea, he himself frequently was aboard ships prior to becoming Bishop, conducting mission work in the Middle East, India and Japan. The hymn along with others are compiled in 'The Hymnal Companion' published in 1870.
The author appears to have opted for the translation 'Jesu' over 'Jesus'. At the time the author was writing, this translation was very uncommon. The editions of the book containing the hymn as well as hymnal sheets from the 19th century use 'Jesus'.
