Creator Allen Young (creator)
DescriptionModel of the side lever paddle engines of the steam packet "Wilberforce", built in 2006 by Allen Young at 1/2" =1 ft scale, based on drawings from "The Steam Engine" by Thomas Tredgold, published 1838.
The "Wilberforce" was built in 1836/7 by Curling & Young-Blackwell, with engines designed by Francis Humphreys and constructed by John Hall. The piston valves in the engine design were of particular interest to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, as he set out to design the engines for the SS Great Britain. According to Tredgold, the "Wilberforce" was a 'steam vessel with engines of 300 horses' power, stationed between London and Hull, belonging to the Humber Union Steam Company.'
