TitleLe Tunnel sous la Tamise
Creator Marc Isambard Brunel (artist)
DescriptionHand-written and illustrated bound prospectus for the Thames Tunnel authored by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel c.1830-32, as a means of canvassing support and funding. The manuscript is on two pages, page one at the top shows a scaled illustration of a cross-section of the Thames, with ships and buildings, with the route of the tunnel under the river from bank to bank. Below this is an illustration to the left of the manuscript showing the twin entrances of the tunnel.
Written in French, the document outlines the history and location of the project begun in 1825 and the necessity of the tunnel in linking areas of London. Brunel writes about the overwhelming public support for the project and the successive financial difficulties, unfortunately denied government assistance. The text finishes with a plea for continuing public confidence in the project and an assurance that those involved with the project will continue to search for funds sufficient to complete the Tunnel.
