TitleLogbook of the East India ship ‘Minerva’ 1788-89
DescriptionLogbook of the East India ship ‘Minerva’ for a voyage from England to Madras and then on to Bengal, Bombay, Port Pinang and China and then returning to England, 1788 to 1789.
There are a few pencil sketches of people on the first pages of the book. Then follow detailed lists of anchors, mast and yards, stowage of water. A brief diary detailing the preparations prior to departure soon transforms into an official log with details of wind and weather. The book also contains a list of the ship’s company (crew) with details of names, ranks and what happened to each man during the voyage (death, deserters, accidents, etc.)
The log was possibly written by the second mate of the vessel, K. Smith or Smythe. This assumption is based on the practicing signatures in pencil at the back of the log book.
