TitleLogbook of the East India ship ‘Shannon’
Creator Walter Chapman (author), Charles Wilson (publisher)
DescriptionLogbook of the East India ship ‘Shannon’ for a voyage from London to Calcutta and back to London, 10 August 1863 – 21 April 1864.
The vessel was commanded by Captain C. L. F. Daniells, and the log is kept by Midshipman Walter Chapman. It is a detailed account of daily proceedings, details on the weather, wind and courses steered. At the front of the log are some sketches of flags and seascapes as well as a list of all the crew members on board. At the back of the log, on the reverse of the last page, there are several lists of clothing items, such as shirts, trousers, towels, socks, etc.
There were three paper bookmarks which marked pages in the log book. The markers were annotated in the handwriting of David MacGregor, possibly for research purposes on the use of different types of sails. The entry for 12 October 1863 was marked with an annotation of ‘Crossjack’, the entry for 27 February 1864 was marked with an annotation of ‘Skysail yard’, and the entry for 5 March 1864 was marked with an annotation of ‘Royal stunsails’. The bookmarks were removed by the curator 01.02.2016
