DescriptionA red leather case which contains an oval miniature of Joan Kingdom painted by Sir Marc Brunel. Red leather on card former. Identical to case on Brunel miniature (2014.03037.2) Silk lining, with inscriptions on either side, in italic script. On the left “[M..] Kingdom painting [by] Isambard Brunel about 1807”. On the right: by Brunel …. Sophia Hawes ….. painted by Sir Isambard Brunel.” Upper edge of right hand section decorated with applied narrow, flat braid. Edges of the lining folded under and appears to have been stuck down. The case has a copper alloy hinge. Two hooked fasteners hold the case shut. Cut out rectangular recesses at the top of the case to allow the suspension loop to project beyond the case. The case is well worn and frayed in several places, cannot be shut without applying considerable pressure and strain to the hinge. The leather has become warped over time
