DescriptionSilver medal commemorating the return of the ss Great Britain to Bristol, 19th July 1970. Obverse bears a starboard view of the Great Britain under sail and an inscription. Reverse bears the screw propeller of the Great Britain flanked by berries and a rose and with an inscription. Inscription of obverse reads: 'THE GREAT BRITAIN / LENGTH 522 FT. BREADTH 50FT 6IN / DEPTH 32FT 6IN . 26 STATEROOMS WITH 1 BED EH 113 WITH 2 BEDS EH / TOTAL WHT OF IRON 1500 TNS / 1000 HORSE POWER / LAUNCHED BY / H.R.H PRINCE ALBERT JULY 19.1843 / BUILT BY THE GREAT WESTERN STEAM SHIP COMPY'. Inscription of reverse reads: 'TO COMMEMORATE THE SAFE RETURN OF THE SS GREAT BRITAIN / TO / BRISTOL / ON / 19TH JULY 1970". Comes in dark burgundy medal box with 'OVERTON, FARRELL & SONS (MEDALLISTS) LTD' written within. Accompanied by a letter from the donor, which has been stamped '19 FEB 2008' and reads: '19 Leystone Close / FROME / BA11.2JY / 14.02.007 / Dear Christian, / I've been having a "clear-out", and / came across the enclosed medal. / I was wondering if you would like / to keep it amongst your artifacts. / Yours sincerely / Peter Davies'. This has been placed in the Object History File.
