DescriptionTextile, framed, glazed with backboard. This embroidery depicts a stylised profile view of the Great Eastern of her port side. The ship is displayed with seven masts and five funnels. All sails are set and the ship is decorated with red flags at each mast top.The Union flag is flying from the jack staff at her stern. Her sidewheel is emblazoned with the ship's name. There are two smaller vessels displayed in the foreground. The vessel on the left is a small paddle steamer with the name 'Ruby' inscribed.
The embroidery is inscribed in English as well as Italian 'Il Piroscafo Grande Orientale ora La Gran Balena', and signed 'Stella Pescio, fece' (which translates as 'Stella Pescio, made by), 1858.
