DescriptionWhite metal (pewter) 35mm medal commemorating the launch of the SS Great Britain on 19 July 1843. On one side it depicts the ship at sea in a starboard view, with sails set and smoke coming from the funnel. Within the waves beneath the ship are the name and location of the medal's producer, Joseph Davis of Birmingham. Beneath the image of the ship are its dimensions, weight, details of the state rooms onboard and of its launch and its having been built by the Great Western Steamship Company. On the other side of the medal are profile portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, with their names in a semi-circle around them. The medal is #2118 in Laurence Brown's British Historical Medals catalogue.
