DescriptionCopper medal commemorating the Great Eastern steamship, dated 1859. It is an American souvenir medal, produced by J. H. Merriam of New York. The recto depicts a starboard view of the ship at sea, under steam with its sails furled, with a caption above and below of the ship's name and year of maiden voyage. The reverse has details of Brunel and Scott Russell as designer and builder of the ship, and details of the ship's dimensions, the latter enclosed in a wreath design.
