Creator John Sewell (publisher), Mather Brown (painter), William Bromley (engraver)
DescriptionMonochrome print engraving of the engineer John Smeaton, apparently cut out from a larger page in a copy of the 'European Magazine.' From a painting in the possession of Alexander Aubert. A half-length portrait of Smeaton seated in a chair, with a lighthouse visible behind his right shoulder - this is the Eddystone Lighthouse built from 1755 to 1759, which Smeaton designed.
A caption beneath the image gives basic biographical information on Smeaton as a civil engineer, Fellow of the Royal Society, and as having been born in Austhorpe, Yorkshire, in 1724. He died in 1792, and this print was produced 1 December that year.
John Smeaton designed lighthouses, canals, harbours and bridges. He worked in civil and mechanical engineering, and was also a physicist.
