DescriptionMonochrome print engraving of the engineer John Smeaton, published for the Society of Civil Engineers in 1798. From a painting in the possession of Alexander Aubert. A half-length portrait of Smeaton seated in a chair, with a lighthouse visible behind his right shoulder - this is the Eddystone Lighthouse built from 1755 to 1759, which Smeaton designed.
A caption beneath the image gives publication information for the print, and basic biographical information on Smeaton as a civil engineer and Fellow of the Royal Society. He died at the age of 68 on October 28th 1792.
John Smeaton designed lighthouses, canals, harbours and bridges. He worked in civil and mechanical engineering, and was also a physicist.
