TitleColoured lithograph print of The Great Eastern steamship, published in the Illustrated London News on 7th November 1857.
Creator Edwin Weedon (artist), Illustrated London News (publisher)
DescriptionColoured lithograph print showing a portside view of the Great Eastern on a choppy green sea, with several sails set and smoke issuing from the funnels. There are three smaller vessels in the foreground. These all appear to be sailing vessels. In the tiny vessel to the left, a small figure seems to be waving their arms in surprise or greeting at the enormous steamship.
The caption beneath the image reads 'The Great Eastern. - Named "The Leviathan,"' Nov. 3rd, 1857.' The print was apparently included as a supplement in the Illustrated London News of November 7th 1857. The artwork was by Edwin Weedon, and there is a note of his name beneath the image.
November 3rd 1857 was the date of the first failed launch of the Great Eastern, so the print was presumably published in connection with this.
