TitleAlbum containing letters to members of the Brunel and Hawes families
Creator Sophia Macnamara (Lady) Hawes (owner)
DescriptionAlbum containing 128 letters across 52 pages, addressed to members of the Brunel and Hawes families. The letters are contained in a brown hardback album belonging to Lady Sophia Macnamara Hawes. The cover is primarily light brown in colour with a dark brown strip of about 1 inch wide running beside the spine up the length of the cover. There are also two triangles of the same dark colour in either corner of the cover. All of these dark coloured sections are seperated from the lighter brown by gold thread trim. The lighter brown colouring which makes up the bulk of the cover is covered in a repeating circular pattern, each circle is about 10mm wide. The back is of the exact same design and the cover of the spine has been lost. The cover and the back of the album are well worn and have in fact detached from the album whole. The pages of the album, of which 52 remain inside the covers, are quite worn, frayed and torn and are in a range of colours - brown, green and yellow, all faded by now. The pages appear to be numbered but the meaning of these numbers is as yet unclear. The 128 letters which are dotted throughout these pages are also numbered but again the purpose of this numbering seems unclear. They have been neatly folded in order to make them fit on the page. They are in very good condition compared to the album itself and the vast majority remain affixed to their pages with glue. The letters vary in size from ones which take up the whole of the page (280mm x 240mm) to ones which are much smaller. The smaller ones constitute the majority of these letters and reveal the high ranking social circle to which the Hawes (and the Brunel family) belonged. A list of the authors and recipients of each letter in the album is given below in alphabetical order followed by the corresponding page number (in brackets) in the album wherever possible. Any page number marked with an ! indicates an approximate page number as the written numbers stop at page 74.
