DescriptionLetter by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel to his son-in-law Benjamin Hawes, dated 7 January 1840. Concerns the construction of the Thames Tunnel. He suggests 'making the [Estimates?] for the Great Descents [?]' and would like the Board 'to call for the same'. He writes he is employing two pupils to make some drawings on a larger scale. At the end of the letter he writes 'We are going on very slow from the excess of water'. Signed 'M I. Brunel''. Underneath is written 'B.Hawes Esq M.P.' One sheet of paper folded but letter only takes up the first page. Addressed to 'Bn Hawes Esq. M.P. Mortlake' on reverse with postmark and the annotations 'paid' and 'M.I.B'.
