TitleLetter by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel to Benjamin Hawes regarding the Thames Tunnel, 1 December 1837
Creator Marc Isambard Brunel (author)
DescriptionLetter by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel to his son-in-law Benjamin Hawes, dated 1 December 1837. Concerns the construction of the Thames Tunnel. He discusses the reduced quantity of water 'coming into the works' following the most recent irruptions compared to previous ones. He says that it is important that they 'obtain what we want from the city' in order to be able to 'avert the [?] of great displacement of ground or the consequences of [?] displacements'; he doesn't want to continue 'to attempt any thing forward' until this is resolved.
He concludes by saying that he would prefer to proceed on the north side, but doesn't really mind which side, provided 'every thing was well supported or secured.' He reports that Mr Page is very weak.
Signed 'M.I. Brunel'. One sheet of paper folded. Addressed to 'Bn. Hawes Esq M.P' on reverse. Remains of a red seal in the bottom left corner on reverse. .
