DescriptionThis is an oval miniature self-portrait of Sir Marc Brunel painted on ivory. Obverse - head and shoulders of Brunel, facing right, as viewed. He is depicted wearing a blue velvet (?) jacket with metal buttons and a white cravat. The background is lighter to the left of the picture, gradually descending into shadow on the right. Reverse - lock of dark brown hair, held in place by pearl seed band across the middle. The band is decorated with four, possibly halved, seed pearls and six small circular cream dots. Fragments of gold cord lie across the lower half of the lock of hair. It is displayed on a silk lined base.The oval gold frame has been made in two parts, with one overlapping the other and is held in place by eight small metal pins. Gold suspension loop at the top with small round finial. A more modern key ring has been looped through the gold suspension ring.
