DescriptionLetter addressed to Messrs Abram Bell & Company in New York, from Thomas Joynson, dated Liverpool 23 August 1839. The letter is marked 'per Great Western' on the front and carries the Ship Letter stamp from Liverpool. Thomas Joynson is a cotton broker in Liverpool and writes to Messrs Abram Bell & Co on business.
On one side of the letter a list is printed titled 'Account of Sales, Imports, &c., of Cotton'. The list is dated Liverpool, 23 August 1839, and annotated at the bottom 'Thomas Joynson, Cotton Broker, Exchange-Alley, Liverpool'.
This may be one of the earliest surviving letter to be carried across the Atlantic on board a steamship.
