TitleDrawing of Puttah Gattah on the river Ganges, India
Creator Edwin Landseer Grundy (artist)
DescriptionA pencil drawing titled 'Puttah Gattah on the Ganges', drawn by Edwin Landseer Grundy, undated but assumed to be sometime in the 1860s when Grundy spent time in India.
The drawing shows a wide river with several small boats. The focal point is a hill on the river bank covered in trees and with a house at the top. There are several further structures visible along the shore, half hidden in the shrubbery and trees. The river seems to be fairly shallow, with most small boats depicted appearing to be smaller boats operated by long poles like punts.
The document was removed from a scrapbook which was compiled by Edwin Landseer Grundy and contained many of his own drawings and sketches. Grundy was an apprentice and junior officer on board the SS Great Britain as well as the Royal Charter in the 1850s. The document is fixed to a page from a scrapbook, with glue in three corners fixing the document onto the page.
