Creator Edwin Landseer Grundy (artist)
DescriptionCartoon drawn for the 'Royal Charter Punch', presumably a newspaper written by passengers and crew on board the steamship 'Royal Charter'. Drawn in ink on blue paper and dated 12 July 1856. Drawn by Edwin Landseer Grundy, a crew member on board at the time. The cartoon consists of a storyboard with 12 individual drawings with the story written underneath each drawing.
The cartoon gives impressions of various crew members on board the 'Royal Charter' and their characters, such as Captain F. Boyce, the purser, several of the officers or mates, and the doctor.
The document was removed from a scrapbook which was compiled by Edwin Landseer Grundy and contained many of his own drawings and sketches. Grundy was an apprentice and junior officer on board the SS Great Britain as well as the Royal Charter in the 1850s. The document is fixed to a page from a scrapbook, with glue in the four corners fixing the document onto the page.
