His hair has a centre part and he has mutton chop whiskers which extend below his chin. He also has a moustache but no beard. He is wearing a three piece suit, with piping on the lapels and edges of the vest, which is open, and a tie. On the front of the card is printed: 'Ritter, Molkenteller & Co. Bombay & Poona, India.'. On the reverse is printed: 'Ritter, Molkenteller & Co / Photographers / Bombay & Poona / India.' There are also handwritten notes: 'Yours very truly / John R. Chapman / 20th Oct. 1871 / S.S. "Surat"', 'CHAPMAN / P&O blt 1866; 2578gs', and 'L £4'. There was also an attached handwritten note by David MacGregor: 'SS SURAT / is a P&O ship, but / not listed in LR 1870, 71 or 72 [she is in all 3] / Red Liv Reg 1872 lists / her, but Chapman is / not the master.' S.S. Surat (1863-1874) was a three-masted iron steam ship built in Jarrow by Palmer Bros & Co, and operated in 1871 by Shallcross & Co. The 1870 Lloyd's Register lists her destination as India and newspaper reports indicate that she was there in October and November 1871. There is currently no know association between John R. Chapman and the S.S. Surat but he may have been a passenger.
