Written from 2 Queen Square Place, Westminster, London. The letter confirms receipt of Yates' letter requesting Fowler and McLean's assistance in arbitrating between Brunel as engineer and John Scott Russell as builder and sets out their intentions as regards the method of proceeding with the arbitration. The letter remarks that it is very likely that, after the ship is completed, there will still be some questions remaining to arbitrate. The letter expresses Fowler and McLean's hope that things will go smoothly because of the fair spirit shown by the various parties in the matter.

Contains copies of letters to and from Isambard Kingdom Brunel regarding the Great Eastern. This volume begins after the launching of the Great Eastern and covers the fitting out of the ship ready for her first voyage and preparations for the first voyage. The volume also touches on Brunel's last illness and the explosion of one of the ship's funnel casings during the first, trial voyage to Weymouth. The correspondence ends on Folio 214 with Folios 215 to 384 left blank.
