DescriptionLetters written whilst at school at Harrow and Elstree. These are typical schoolboy letters discussing family and school affairs. Includes a fine drawing of naval ships. Mainly 1853-54, not all dated.

These letters have been arranged in chronological order, according to the dates on the letters or the postmarks on the envelopes, where they appear. Many of the letters have no original date or postmark, but have a later annotation of a year (e.g. 1853-4), which has been used to place them in chronological sequence if there is no other date. A close reading of the letters indicates that these years should be treated with some caution; for example, the drawing of the bombardment of Odessa (DM1954/3/2/26) has been labelled 1855, although the the bombardment took place in April 1854. Other letters have been dated from the postmark on the envelope. Again, this dating is not necessarily reliable, since some letters are obviously in the wrong envelopes because the postmark does not match the date of the letter.
