TitleAbstract of the Steaming Log for the SS Great Britain
DescriptionThe sheet has an abstract of the steaming log for a return voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne, Australia. One side of the sheet shows the date, the wind courses and wind direction, the force, speed of forces, the speed of ship, the slip of screws and engine revolutions for each day from the ship's departure in Liverpool on 13th June to its arrival in Melbourne on 17th July. There are also any general remarks (usually about the strength of the wind or the sails used) and an explanatory paragraph below the log commenting on the consumption of coal during the voyage, the average daily consumption and explaining any extraordinary happenings. The reverse of the sheet has the log for the return journey, covering the period from the departure in Melbourne on 30 October 1854 to the arrival in Liverpool in January 1855. The log for the return journey is slightly less detailed than the outward journey with several days running together if similar conditions were met several days in a row. The log for the return journey also includes a paragraph describing the coal consumption and the efficiency of the engine.
