TitleCompressed air company for the purpose of superseding steam on rail roads
DescriptionA note at the bottom of this manuscript states that 'Vacuum was tried and failed on the Croydon line'. This undated prospectus proposed the use of compressed air to push the train rather than exhausting the tube in front as in the atmospheric system, which had proved a failure by 1848 on the Croydon line shortly before Isambard Kingdom Brunel's own South Devon line failed.
Undated manuscript prospectus.
